About Us

Welcome!

“iKapa” is the isi-Xhosa word for “Cape”.

HISTORY

iKapa Energy was co-founded in Cape Town in 2014 by the late Right Hon. Gerald Morkel who was elected to seven successive terms of public office across national, provincial and local spheres of Government including as Premier of the Western Cape and Mayor of the City of Cape Town.

The scope of iKapa Energy was to operate within the Integrated Resource Plan ("IRP") of National Government and develop energy infrastructure to supply cost effective energy to the national grid. To this end iKapa Energy successfully concluded a joint development agreement ("JDA") with an internationally listed European energy company and a leading international oil company ("IOC") for the supply of liquid natural gas ("LNG") as well as a letter of intent ("LOI") with an international shipping company for the charter of a floating storage and regasification unit ("FSRU") to participate in the proposed gas-to-power ("GTP") program that was eventually postponed in 2016 by National Government.

In 2017 iKapa Energy formed a consortium and signed joint development agreements with a European manufacturer and a leading local desalination company to participate in the request for proposal ("RFP") n. 99S/2017/18 for desalinated water issued by the City of Cape Town as a result of the severe drought of 2017. The consortium was successful and was awarded preferred bidder status for an 80 MLD desalination plant. After heavy rains that resulted in the Cape Town water reserves being restored the procurement program was cancelled.

iKAPA ENERGY TODAY

After a hiatus of over two years due to the Covid-19 epidemic that halted development activities, the passing away of the original founder Right Hon. Gerald Morkel and the resignation of Mthozami Xiphu due to conflicts of interest arising from his appointment to the board of PetroSA, Craig Morkel son of Gerald, and Robert Longhi founded the NewCo iKapa Energy Holdings (Pty) Limited with a wider social object in respect to the previous iKapa Energy, now concentrating also on development of renewables and nuclear as well as oil and gas with the aim of being a technologically neutral company.

In 2023 iKapa Energy Holdings successfully negotiated land options in Western Cape of nearly 12,000 hectares and are currently developing 2.2 GWp of solar PV and battery storage ("BESS").

In 2024 iKapa Energy Holdings has formed a consortium with a French LNG developer and a leading Asian LNG EPC company to participate in the Eskom tender 1237 GX-R for the supply, storage, delivery and offloading/transport of LNG to Ankerlig and Gourikwa power stations in Western Cape and as an indirect result of this is also development a 400 MWp CCGT power station project also in Western Cape. In addition an agreement was reached with an international Asian company to develop a nuclear reactor patent in South Africa to be ready for commercial development by the end of 2027.
